Even when I was a child, I loved to read and write. Reading took me away to another place; writing let me get my feelings out.
I used to write verses and how I felt about things in my life. I never showed them to anyone because I was embarrassed.
As time passed, my husband gave me a computer for Christmas. I didn’t even know how to turn it on, but I kept trying, and eventually, I got it!
While online, I saw an ad for a greeting card writing class. I was so excited. My husband was not happy, but I did it! By the time it was over, I had learned a lot and made friends, and I still have them today.
When I first started, there was no emailing your submissions; you had to print them out on index cards, and snail mail them to the greeting card companies that accept freelance writers.
I had so many rejections at first, but I was thrilled when I finally sold a verse. It was a simple two-line verse.
It said, “Your love speaks.” And on the inside, “My heart listens.”
When I excitedly told my family, my husband said, “Who wrote this?” I said I did, and then he said, “You know you can’t use other people’s writing, right?”
But it gave me the confidence that I needed, and I started writing more and learning more about what the companies were looking for, and I started to sell more writing.
Today, I write primarily on an assignment basis. They send me the images and I write for those and email them back. I still enjoy it as much today as did in theI beginning.
